World No Tobacco Day is May 31

Dear CAMBRIDGE families, Every year, on May 31, the World Health Organization (WHO) and public health and community partners from across the globe mark World No Tobacco Day, highlighting the health impact of tobacco use and the most effective policies to fight back against the epidemic. The focus of World No Tobacco Day 2020 is on "tobacco and lung health." The campaign will increase awareness on: the negative impact that tobacco has on people’s lung health, from cancer to chronic respiratory disease, the fundamental role lungs play for the health and well-being of all people. This year more than ever the health impacts of smoking are that more concerning. Smoking is not only bad for the smoker but it causes air pollution which impacts us all. Please join with me and people from all over the globe in marking May 31st as a no tobacco day. Who knows, stopping for a day might give you the courage to quit permanently. Tick Talk

Good morning Cambridge families, in the spring and summer months we spend a lot of time outside. You can enjoy the great outdoors but don't forget about the threat of ticks. Ticks can carry diseases like Lyme disease. Join Raji and Alex while they go for a walk and talk about what ticks are and how you can avoid them.

HealthBeat-Cut the Sugar

Good morning Cambridge families, as a follow up to Tuesday's lesson on the fun and health benefits of growing and eating your own vegetables, I wanted to share this video on healthy snack choices. By checking labels you can chose foods with the least amount of sugar and stay away from artificial flavors. By cutting the sugar in your food you can eat good things now so you can feel better later. Some healthy snack ideas are a bowl of yogurt, fruit and granola, a bag of almond and raisins, or carrots and broccoli with a hummus dip. What is your healthy snack choice? Healthy Eating | Family Gardens | PBS LearningMedia

Good morning Cambridge families, I hear a lot of you have been gardening. I'm thrilled about that knowing vegetables are such an important part of a healthy diet.  So as a way to inspire all you budding new gardeners, I've attached a video of 11 year old Samuel Davis who several years ago won the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge by using vegetables he grew from his garden. Sam was honored for his winning Sam's Southern Savoring Salmon Supreme recipe at the White House. Maybe you'll be inspired to make a tasty meal with the vegetables you grow. In the meantime, I hope you will continue to plant seeds, eat well and make friends with vegetables. Healthy Eating | Family Gardens | PBS LearningMedia

Walk at lunch/exercise 2020

Good morning Cambridge families, I was so excited to get pictures of students participating in "National Walk at Lunch/Recess Day". Those that didn't walk joined in spirit by engaging in other healthy activities they enjoy. Remember being active is not about what you're doing. It's about getting outside and moving. Hope you enjoy the show:)

National Pet Week!

Good morning Cambridge families, it's National Pet Week! Did you know that while you are taking care of your pet, your pet is taking care of you? There have been many studies that show owning a pet is good for your health! When you pet, cuddle or just spending time with your pet it helps decrease feelings of anxiety and loneliness and makes you feel better. And walking your pet is one of the best ways to keep you and your pet healthy.  Studies have shown people that walk their dogs walk on average an extra 30 minutes a day and we know exercise keeps us healthy. And because  pets are fun to spend time with, they can help us feel happier. Celebrate National Pet week by sending me a picture of you and your favorite pet!

Noah Henry (A Rainbow Story)

Good morning Cambridge families, today you are in for a real treat! Attached is the video of the story of Noah Henry read by our very own Ms. Edgerton:) The story was written and illustrated by Deana Sobel Lederman. Deana is a mom, just like your own, who chose to openly share through this beautiful story how her children were feeling about Covid19. The story shows that even during difficult and uncertain times, we can still chose to support and help each other. I hope you will make your own rainbow to post in the window to show your friends and family you are thinking of them.

The connection between a healthy planet and a healthy body

Good morning Cambridge families, Part of being healthy is keeping the space we live in pollution free. A healthy planet gives us clean air to breathe, clean water to drink and healthy food to eat. You need a healthy planet to have a healthy body. We all need to play a part in protecting our planet. How to Brush Your Teeth Properly

Good Morning Cambridge Families, today's health topic is tooth brushing! We can all agree that having healthy teeth is important. Without them it would be hard to eat healthy food like fruits and vegetables. And think about it, your smile is the first thing people notice when they meet you. You also need your teeth to talk so people can understand you. And it's not just brushing and flossing that keep your teeth healthy-you also need to be careful about what you eat or drink. Eat lots of fruit and vegetables and drink water instead of soda and don't forget to smile:)
